A scaled-down, rear-wheel drive supercar with red-carpet looks, the stunning 4C comes in coupé and Spider roadster body styles, and offers explosive performance for keen drivers.
The mid-engined 4C thunders down the road. Weighing less than a tonne, thanks to its carbon fibre monocoque chassis, it has a 237bhp turbo charged engine that boasts 350Nm of torque from just 2,200rpm.
That means ballistic acceleration from a standstill and through the gears too. Engage the launch control function and 60mph is just 4.5 seconds away.
The 4C is the culmination of decades of beautiful Alfa Romeo design. The taut tail is inspired by the classic 33 Stradale of the late ‘60s, the nose taken from the decidedly 21st-century 8C Competizione supercar. Alfa’s trademark ‘Scudetto’ grille and trefoil proudly adorn the low-set nose, with blacked-out A-pillars creating a wraparound windscreen effect. It’s not all about looks, though. Every line has been carefully sculpted to improve downforce, meaning increased stability at high speeds, and the wheels are larger at the back, for even better grip.
And everything that can be done to reduce weight, has been. The fluid body panels are made from a super-strong glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, while the windows are 15 percent thinner than usual to save precious kilos.
The sleek cabin is a joy to spend time in, with sports seats that hold you in place, exposed carbon fibre weave at the edges, and aluminium pedals lifted straight from a race-spec single-seater.
A stripped-back racer it may be, but the 4C remains surprisingly affordable to run. Free of the weight and distraction of unnecessary driver aids and technology you’ll never use, fuel economy is rated at an astonishing 41.5mpg, and the list price is tens of thousands less than its rivals. The remarkably low kerb-weight also places less stress on tyres and brakes, extending their life too.
The silky-smooth twin-clutch automatic gearbox leaves your hands free to grip the flat-bottomed steering wheel and focus on the corners, with the dashboard angled towards you so you never need to take your eyes from the road.
Use the Alfa DNA selector to change the 4C’s behaviour. Switch from Normal to Dynamic mode to disengage the ABS and stability control system, putting you in complete control, or select All Weather when road conditions start to become treacherous. Then, for track days, engage the exclusive Race mode…
